Depending on your interests, Nerja can offer a variety of reasons to come at any time of the year. The following information should help you to decide when would be the best time to visit us, depending on your specific interests.
Spring - Nerja is lovely in the Spring, with temperatures ranging from 11ºC to 21ºC around April. A visit in Spring provides one of the best times for walking, riding or cycling in the Axarquia mountains when the flora and fauna are at their best. Easter week is also a fantastic time to visit as Andalucía hosts many fiestas celebrating this important time in the religious calendar.
Summer - Nerja comes in to its own during the summer months as the sea warms up, and both locals and tourists alike come to the coast to enjoy the fun atmosphere offered by the town's many beaches and various water-based activities. Average temperatures can reach 30ºC, so there is no better time to relax in Nerja and make the most of the sunny days and balmy evenings. Nerja also hosts its magical San Juan festival in late June, celebrating its special relationship with the sea with an all-night beach party and fireworks. July is the month for Nerja's long-running festival in the caves with big-name stars from classical music, opera and ballet performing underground in a spectacular setting.
August sees Málaga's massive week-long feria with 24 hour celebrating, Spanish-style - it is one of Andalucía's biggest and most popular, offering both street-parties with traditional shows and processions.
Autumn - This is a great time to visit Nerja as it is a little quieter, but still has average temperatures around 24ºC. Nerja's biggest festival takes place in early October with five days of dressing up and partying. This can also be an ideal time to visit some of the sites that may be busier during the summer months, for example the Alhambra in Granada or the Picasso museum in Málaga.
Winter - Nerja has never seen snow and in fact it is possible to sunbathe on the beach in December. With the Sierra Nevada (see Sierra Nevada's ski information website for details) only 1½-hour drive away, you could realistically have a beach and ski holiday in one. Visiting the town in winter also allows you the chance to experience life as the locals live it at a slower pace and enjoying the simple out-of-season pleasures that the region has to offer.
